financial literacy

what is financial literacy?

It starts with asking the right questions. Three to sit with before anything else.

question one

What is your biggest money question?

The one you have never quite asked out loud. That is usually the useful one.

question two

What is your greatest money challenge?

Earning it, keeping it, growing it, or talking about it.

question three

What is your relationship with money?

How money makes you feel is where your money mindset starts.

what we coverMoney and economics, money mindsets, your budget, credit, saving and investing, impact investing, the inaam approach, and tax.

economics

money is a commodity

Decoding money takes a little economics. Money is bought, sold and priced like anything else, so the same rules apply to it.

the basics

Supply and demand

When supply grows faster than demand, the price falls. When demand outruns supply, it rises.

how much is out there

Money supply

The amount of money circulating. The more of it there is, the less each dollar is worth.

who pulls the levers

Fiscal and monetary policy

Fiscal policy is government spending and tax. Monetary policy is the central bank setting interest rates and the money supply.

the result

Inflation

When money grows faster than the goods it buys, prices rise and each dollar buys less.

why it matters to youCash that sits still loses buying power to inflation over time. That is the starting point for saving and investing, which come later.

money mindsets

breaking the taboo around money

Your money mindset is your thoughts and beliefs towards money. If money makes you anxious, you are far from alone.

57%

of young Aussies experience financial anxiety

healthy

Sounds like

  • It’s possible for me to achieve my money goals
  • I don’t have to compare myself to others
  • I have the freedom to spend, but I also know how and when to say no

unhealthy

Sounds like

  • Looking at my finances is too stressful
  • I’m just not good with money
  • I really want to buy this, I’ll just worry about the money later

money mindsets

what’s your money story?

Your money story is the narrative you tell yourself about money. These questions help you unpack yours.

unpacking money stories

Seven questions to ask yourself

  • How were finances handled in your family growing up?
  • Do you believe money is good or bad?
  • What would you consider to be a luxury purchase?
  • Did certain people in your life influence your money story?
  • Do you view money as a shared responsibility in a family?
  • What’s your current financial situation? Are you happy with it?
  • Do your money goals feel achievable?
money in your relationships

Every money conversation you have is an interaction between your money story and the money story of the person you’re talking to. How do your money priorities play into your relationships with family, friends and a significant other?

talking about money

how to talk about money

Talking about money gets easier with a few ground rules. And in business, a few more.

do

Start the conversation

  • Accept that you need to talk about money
  • Understand your current situation: how much am I earning, how much am I spending, do I owe any money, do I need to save for something?
  • Set goals and be accountable
  • Speak in proportions, not absolutes
  • Enquire in ranges
  • Ask for help

don’t

Things to avoid

  • Bombard someone with questions. Ask if they are comfortable first
  • Ask someone how much they earn
  • Compare salaries
  • Try to become the next Warren Buffett. Become the next you
  • Advise off a hunch
  • Mix business and friendships, unless…

money in businessThe best deals are never advertised, you have to ask for them. The first offer on the table is never the best one. Speak in proportions and ranges, know your intended outcome before you go in, and always be polite.

credit

what is credit?

Put $100 in a bank and the bank keeps a slice in reserve and lends out the rest. That loan lands in someone else’s account and gets lent out again. Credit is how money multiplies through the system.

credit

credit scores and HECS

The questions that come up every time, with the short answers.

credit score

Questions and answers

  • What is a credit score? An assessment of how you manage your credit.
  • How do I build a good one? Get some credit and start small. Think a store card.
  • What should I absolutely not do? Pay late, borrow excessively, or buy things you can’t currently afford.
  • Credit cards, yay or nay? Yay, if used wisely.
  • Why does a good score matter? It shapes what you can borrow as you grow, and it works the same way the world over.

HECS debt

Questions and answers

  • What is it? The Higher Education Loan Program.
  • When do I start repaying? Once your income passes $67,000 a year, the 2025-26 threshold.
  • Do I pay interest? No interest. The balance is indexed each year, an inflation adjustment only.
  • Can I pay it off early? Yes, with voluntary repayments.

and insuranceLife and health insurance are yours to choose. Medicare, WorkSafe and Fair Work are the safety nets for health care, injuries at work, and your pay.

saving vs investing

what’s the difference?

Saving parks money. Investing puts it to work. Compound interest is where the gap between them shows up.

investing

Money that works for you

  • Using your money to make more money
  • Growing the value and purchasing power of your money

saving

Money put away

  • Putting money away without intent for it to grow
  • A safety net, and a plan B

investing

how to invest

Four styles you will hear about. They are not mutually exclusive, and plenty of portfolios mix them.

style one

Growth

Companies expected to grow faster than the market. You pay today for growth you expect later.

style two

Value

Companies priced below what their fundamentals suggest, held in the hope the market catches up.

style three

Passive

Track an index. Low cost and few decisions, and you accept the market’s return.

style four

Active

Pick, manage and rebalance holdings to try to beat the market. Higher cost, and no guarantee it works.

two questions before you start

Long term or short term? Match the horizon to the goal: money you need within a year belongs somewhere different from money you won’t touch for a decade. Use debt to invest? Borrowing magnifies losses as well as gains, so get personal advice before you do it.

diversification

Spread your money across different holdings and no single one can sink you. It helps up to a point, and then each extra holding adds less than the last.

point ofdiminishing returns point of maximum yield INCREASING DIMINISHING NEGATIVE input: more holdings → output → 0

Increasing returns

Early on, each new holding spreads your risk in a way you can feel.

Diminishing returns

Past the first turning point, more holdings still help, but each one adds less.

Negative returns

Past the peak, extra holdings add cost and complexity without adding protection.

investing

the five asset classes

Every investment sits in one of five buckets. A portfolio is the mix you choose across them.

01

Equity

Ownership of a business. Startup funding, stocks, ETFs, mutual funds.

02

Liquidity, and the power to use it. Savings accounts, liquid funds, cash itself.

03

Fixed income

Lending money to someone for a set period. Bonds, fixed and recurring deposits, debentures.

04

Commodities

Ownership of goods with an end use. Silver, gold, crude oil, copper.

05

Alternatives

impact investing

what is impact investing?

Investing in companies that aim to make money and a measurable, positive difference to people or the planet. Two impact categories define the inaam portfolio.

Category B

Businesses that benefit the planet or people through sustainable practices, environmental stewardship, or inclusive products.

Category C

Companies that contribute solutions to planetary or societal problems, such as renewable energy, decarbonisation and the circular economy.

every company is evaluated on five dimensions of impact

what

The outcome the company contributes to, good or bad.

who

The people or the planet that experience it.

how much

How many it reaches, how deeply, and for how long.

contribution

Whether it would have happened without the company.

risk

The chance the impact turns out different from what was expected.

the inaam approach

the inaam impact framework

Three core foundations every company in the inaam portfolio is assessed on: financial strength, then impact, then leadership that can sustain both.

foundation 01

Financials

  • Market cap of at least $500 million, an established market presence
  • EBITDA above $100 million, so the business is profitable to run
  • Revenue of at least $500 million a year
  • Net profit margin between 5% and 10%, a balance of reinvestment and profit
  • Publicly listed, for transparency, liquidity and regulatory compliance

foundation 02

Impact

  • Category B: benefits the planet or people through how it operates
  • Category C: contributes solutions to planetary or societal problems
  • Scored on the five dimensions: what, who, how much, contribution and risk

foundation 03

Leadership

  • Integrity and transparency: a public track record of ethical decision-making and governance
  • Vision for impact: a genuine, strategic commitment to long-term value for society or the planet, not just shareholders
  • Diversity and inclusion: boards and executive teams that reflect gender, ethnic and experiential diversity

Building a first portfolio shouldn’t need a finance degree. In the inaam app it takes three questions.

question 1

What matters most to you?

Pick from the five impact themes.

question 2

What impact do you want to make?

Narrow it down within each theme you picked.

question 3

What innovations inspire you?

The kinds of solutions you want your money behind.

reading the numbers

understanding returns

A return figure needs three things beside it before it means anything: its period, whether it is yearly or cumulative, and whether it actually happened.

yearly or cumulative

Same money, two numbers

In the compounding example, 10% a year compounded monthly turns $1,200 into $3,248 over ten years. That is 171% cumulative. Check which one you are reading.

real or backtested

A backtest is a simulation

A backtest applies today’s rules to past prices. It shows what might have happened if those rules had been in place. Nobody earned that return, and it should always be labelled as one.

past and future

Always ask for the dates

A figure with no start and end date tells you very little. And past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance.

what it pays for

Why do we need tax?

Roads, hospitals, schools, welfare and the rest of what keeps the country running.

the good

Effective tax

Arranging your affairs within the rules so you pay what you owe and no more. Legal and sensible.

the bad

Tax evasion

Not declaring income, or claiming deductions you are not entitled to. Illegal.

the ugly

Tax fraud

Deliberately falsifying records or setting up schemes to avoid tax. Illegal, with serious penalties.
